[LMS] What Is an LMS? When Your Company Needs Its Own Training Site

VisionPencil·

An LMS (Learning Management System) is a training website that keeps your learning content in one place and records who learned what, and how far they got. If your company trains staff with video, putting those videos on an LMS instead of sending them around by messenger or USB means viewing and quiz results are recorded automatically. VisionPencil makes training videos and also builds and runs a dedicated training site for your company, VisionPencil LMS, to deliver them to your staff.

What is an LMS?

As the name says, an LMS is a system for managing learning. It does three main jobs.

  • Store: training videos, manuals and quizzes, organized by course.
  • Deliver: staff open it anytime on a phone or PC and watch the training they need.
  • Record: who watched which video to the end, and what they scored on the quiz.

University course sites and public online course platforms are also LMSs. A company LMS adds one more requirement: only your own employees should be able to get in.

Does my company need an LMS?

If two or more of these sound familiar, it is time to consider one.

  • Senior staff repeat the same explanation every time a new hire joins.
  • Shift work or site schedules make it hard to gather everyone in one room.
  • Some training, such as safety training, needs a completion record.
  • You need training material in several languages for foreign workers.
  • Training videos are scattered across shared folders, chats and personal PCs, and nobody is sure which is the latest.

If you train only a few people and in-person training works, training videos alone may be enough. Those videos can move to an LMS later as they are.

What makes an LMS work for field staff?

Field staff mostly watch on their phones, in short breaks during work. So VisionPencil LMS focuses less on adding features and more on cutting the time it takes to find and rewatch things.

  • Chapter jumps: every video has a “3:30 · what happens” list, so staff rewatch only the scene they need.
  • Summaries and quizzes: a three-line key summary, and a quiz that is graded instantly with explanations.
  • Voice search: search by speaking when your hands are busy. Mispronounced words are corrected to your company's own terms.
  • Progress reports: training managers see each person's viewing progress and quiz score on one screen.
  • Company email only: only staff verified by company email can enter, fully separated from other companies.

How does setup work?

  1. Send your material: manuals, rules, site material and any videos you already have.
  2. Video production: we make training videos through on-site filming or document motion graphics. Videos are contracted per video.
  3. Open the site: your logo, brand color and your own address, with sign-up limited to your company email domain.
  4. Run it all year: the training site is contracted for 1, 2, 3 or 5 years, so it fits a yearly training budget. During the term we add videos and track progress.

FAQ

Can we put videos we already have on the LMS?

Yes. We upload your existing videos as they are and add chapter lists, summaries and quizzes. They are managed on the same site as any new videos.

Can people outside the company see our training site?

By default only staff verified by company email can enter. It can also run as a public classroom anyone can view, like the Daegu Technopark site.

How is it contracted?

The training site is contracted for 1, 2, 3 or 5 years, and training videos per video. Tell us how many videos and how long, and we will plan around that.

Do you support multilingual training?

Yes. We produce videos in Korean, English, Indonesian and other languages, and the training site can show them in separate tabs by country or plant.

Want to know what would fit your company's training? Send us one document through the contact page and we will outline the episodes and schedule. We reply in English.
