왜 만들었나
작품 뒤의 마음
아들이 생후 6개월쯤 됐을 때, 제가 말할 때마다 입술을 빤히 쳐다보기 시작했습니다. 눈이 아니라 입술을. 의미를 듣기 전에 소리의 모양부터 보고 있다는 걸 알아챘어요. 한글이 만들어진 방식이 정확히 그랬습니다. 입술, 혀, 목구멍의 모양을 보고 글자를 만든 것. 작은 아이가 저에게 가르쳐 줬습니다. 듣는 일은 눈에서 시작된다는 걸.

어떻게 생각했나
작품 뒤의 사고
한글을 만든 학자들은 입의 모양을 보며 글자를 설계했습니다. 입술, 혀, 목구멍. 각 글자는 발음 기관의 위치를 본떴습니다. 그러니 한글은 이미 얼어붙은 소리의 파동입니다. 저는 그것을 다시 녹였을 뿐입니다.
