왜 만들었나
작품 뒤의 마음
아들이 생후 3개월 됐을 때 만든 작품입니다. 옆에 앉아 아이의 손이 펴졌다 쥐어졌다 하는 모습을 봤어요. 그 작고 완벽한 나선. 깨달았습니다. 아이는 언어보다 오래된 명령서를 들고 있다는 걸. 저도, 할아버지도 그랬다는 걸. DNA 옆에 놓인 한글은, 같은 코드의 어린 동생처럼 보였습니다.

어떻게 생각했나
작품 뒤의 사고
DNA는 몸을 적습니다. 언어는 마음을 적습니다. 둘 다 적은 수의 기호로 된 알파벳이고, 둘 다 나선이며, 둘 다 작은 실수와 함께 복제됩니다. 그 실수가 진화가 됩니다. 한글을 나선 안에 넣은 건, '글쓰기는 처음부터 생물학이었던 게 아닐까' 묻기 위해서였습니다.

당신이 느끼길 바라는 것
생일에 보세요. 당신의, 아이의, 누구든의. 나선은 축하하지 않습니다. 계속될 뿐입니다. 그게 더 큰 축하입니다. 당신은 코드가 불완전하게 복사됐기 때문에 존재합니다. 그 불완전함이 곧 당신이었습니다.
